Ever wondered if your relationship was meant to be? It could be a karmic relationship – here are the common signs you might be in one
If you have been lucky enough to find ‘The One’, hold on to them – after all, when you know, you know, right? However, the powerful connection you’re feeling could be the beginning of a karmic relationship. “This union is about settling the energy balance carried forward from previous lives between us and another person,” explains soul-led therapist, Ceryn Rowntree (cerynrowntree.com). What hasn’t been resolved between you and someone else in a past life, will show up in your current life as old trauma, betrayals or rejection, making karmic relationships extremely painful.
Daniela Birch, founder of Soul Growth Enterprises (danielabirch.com), believes the most important aspect of a karmic relationship is that they show you the key lessons you are here to master. For example, self-love, forgiveness or learning to let go. But how do you know you are in a karmic relationship?
According to Ceryn, it is not necessarily romantic, but is passionate and feels destined – almost like the universe conspired to connect you. However, power games, controlling behaviours and an off/on dynamic are common themes. And these toxic characteristics have the ability to make you feel worthless or undeserving of love. “A key sign is they can put you down, such as saying you need to lose weight or dye your hair, or feeling there are conditions placed on the relationship,” says Daniela. For example, “I will only love you if you do this for me.”
This is not an easy relationship to end and can continue for years, as there are many co-dependency and emotional attachments. “Usually, one partner likes to control the other,” says Daniela, “so, they both end up feeling they cannot survive without the other.” And whilst you should never stay in an abusive relationship, it is advised you try to reach a place of true selflove and self-worth before moving on. “If you feel trapped or not able to leave by yourself,” says Daniela, “I would seriously advise you seek the help of an experienced practitioner, to assist the process for you or seek advice from friends and family – you deserve to be in a relationship, based on equality and respect.”
If you are still wondering whether you are in a karmic relationship or have met ‘The One’, Daniela notes that being with your soul mate should feel harmonic and balanced – you bring out each other’s gifts and want what’s best for your respective wellbeing, compared to a karmic mate, who tends to draw out your fears and insecurities.
After experiencing the hurt and pain that comes with a karmic relationship, the term ‘soul mate can seem so trite. However, once you do eventually meet the right person, it will make complete sense. After all, when our brains and bodies deteriorate, when our precious memories are cruelly stripped away from us – it is what lasts. A soul is the thing we can love and hold onto when all else fades away.
