This month, we take a closer look at Jin Shin Jyutsu, a type of energy healing that could be perfect for you
We live in a busy and often stressful world, and this can lead to us feeling tense, and makes it difficult to unwind and find a sense of calm. If you find yourself feeling like this, and you are seeking a natural and safe way to restore your balance, Jin Shin Jyutsu could help.
This is a healing therapy, which is non-invasive and energy-based. It sees a practitioner using both of their hands to hold a combination of areas on the body known as ‘safety energy locations’, or SELs. There are 26 of these on each side of the body, and they all link to a different joint or organ. The part of the body the practitioner focuses on will depend on the root of the problem. No pressure or manipulation is used and the patient remains fully clothed throughout their session.
Although there are similarities between Jin Shin Jyutsu and other therapies, it has its own individual philosophy that energy travels through the body along pathways (known as ‘flows’) and at different levels. The fingers are key in the practise of Jin Shin Jyutsu.
There are hundred of different ways of bending, stretching, moving and clasping them together which help to relieve emotional and physical problems. In addition, it is said that each one can regulate thousands of different bodily functions.
It is possible to carry some of these out at home, but it is a good idea to see a trained practitioner first, for guidance. One of the basic movements is designed to harmonise the central flow of your body. You can do this by keeping the right hand on the top of the head, place the fingers of your left hand between the eyebrows, then on the tip of the nose, on your breastbone, above the solar plexus and finally on top of the pubic bone. Leaving your left hand in position, move your right hand to the base of your spine. This works on the digestive system. If you were feeling stressed, it would calm you.
As with any therapy, each individual will react slightly differently to it. Some people who use the therapy will feel so relaxed they are close to sleep, while others can feel a response in the area being treated, such as temperature changes or a tingling sensation.
This practice encourages a life of calm, patience, minimising stress. It is this philosophy that attracts people, especially in our modern day world where we all go through periods of time where we suffer with stresses.
