Your bags are packed and you’re ready to go, but there’s still that niggling worry about the usual holiday problems. Long days basking in the sun are fabulous for the soul but not so great for the skin, with added worries about pesky mosquitos and the likelihood of picking up a nasty tummy bug.
So what should be your plan of action? Abundance & Health’s Nutrition expert Jacqueline Newson shares her tips on how to enjoy the best of summer, without succumbing to the usual obstacles…
Vitamin C has antioxidant properties that help to counter any free radical cell damage caused to the skin due to excess sun exposure. This clever antioxidant also has the ability to regenerate other antioxidants, such as vitamin E, giving added protection. It also has amazing wound healing abilities and can help to prevent the dangerous consequences of long term sun exposure which can potentially lead to skin cancer.
Finding a solution for mosquito bites is akin to the Holy Grail for many people, especially those of us who have particularly extreme allergic reactions. Our bodies’ release histamine as a defence mechanism to protect us against foreign invaders such as mosquito stings. Unfortunately, this mechanism produces the nasty welts and itching associated with bites. Anti-histamine drugs help to block histamines and alleviate the symptoms, however they also produce unwanted side effects such as drowsiness and constipation. Fortunately Vitamin C is a natural anti-histamine, which helps to detoxify the histamine and reduce the inflammatory substances that cause problems.
For some people summer holidays are ruined by tummy bugs that result in painful stomach cramps and frequent trips to the bathroom. Vitamin C is a powerful weapon our body utilises to offer us immunity to bugs and viruses. It can become seriously depleted during stressful times such as planning holidays and adjusting to different climates and environments. It is therefore essential to top up vitamin C throughout the summer, especially if you’re planning a trip abroad.
Subjecting yourself to high levels of sun exposure places a lot of stress on the skin, which calls for extra protective measures. Vitamin C is vital for the synthesis of collagen, which is one of the most abundant proteins in our bodies and an essential component of the connective tissue that holds our skin together. As well as being responsible for the skin’s suppleness and elasticity, collagen provides the structure for our blood vessels allowing for oxygen, water and other nutrients to be carried to the skin, maintaining that youthful, plumped up, healthy glow.
As well as looking after your skin and supporting your immune system, Vitamin C plays an important role in generating energy in the body. It is part of a complex mechanism in the body that helps to transport nutrients to the mitochondria in our cells. These are the little powerhouses that are responsible for energy production to make sure we can function optimally at all times.
Stress is thought to deplete our levels of vitamin C considerably making us less able to cope. Nobody wants to allow feelings of stress and anxiety to spoil a well-deserved holiday so make sure that Vitamin C is top of your list and not bottom! It is important to choose a form of vitamin C that is well absorbed and can be utilised by the body to deliver its hugely beneficial effects.
Altrient C offers a method of vitamin C delivery, for all the benefits of large doses without the potential side effects - delivering almost 100% of its bounty to the cells that need it.
