2015 has been a significant year for the rise of veganism. With the World Health Organisation recently declaring that eating red and processed meat is ‘carcinogenic’ for a person’s health and listing bacon, sausages and burgers in the same category as cigarettes, alcohol and asbestos… well, that’s at least one huge reason to consider adopting a-plant based diet. Here are a further six…
1. Animal welfare issues
Thanks to pioneering animal rights organisations such as PETA whose mantra is ‘Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on or abuse in any other way’ and Mercy for Animals who carry out undercover investigations and blow the lid via social media on the cruel treatment of animals on meat and dairy farms, there is no excuse to deny how cruel the meat and dairy industry can be.
2. Help the planet
The animal agriculture industry is the leading cause of climate change, deforestation and water wastage. Did you know that for every day you don’t eat meat you save around 1,110 gallons of fresh water, save 30 square foot of rainforest and stop approximately 20lbs of C02 being produced?!
Processed meat, fish and dairy products are treated with hormones and antibiotics, which, when consumed is extremely detrimental to a person’s health. Countless surveys, studies and industry reports over the years have found that these types of foods are linked to heart disease, various cancers, high blood pressure, asthma and eczema along with obesity problems and diabetes. By cutting out these foods and eating a plant-based diet, you are significantly improving your health and reducing the risk of becoming ill.
4. Save money
Vegetables, grains, nuts and pastas are all super-cheap to buy and make into the most versatile and delicious meals. They also have a long shelf life and, when bought in bulk, can save you more money down the line.
5. Be happier!
Plant based meals contain lots of vitamins, minerals and natural sugars, which fill you with energy, improve your concentration and focus making you feel much heathier and therefore happier.
6. It is delicious!
Contrary to popular misconception, a vegan diet does not consist solely of tofu and lettuce. A vegan diet includes all of the foods you have come accustomed to eating, only without the meat and dairy. Fill up on delicious vegan sausages, burgers, cakes, stews and casseroles and if you feel like a naughty treat, reach for the Oreos, Skittles, dark chocolate or Jammy Dodgers. That’s right… they’re all vegan too!
