Dress for your mood everyday with our handy guide
Can we influence our optimal wellbeing by simply changing the way that we dress? Research shows that colours can have a psychological effect on your emotions, and that the right shade has the ability to boost your self esteem and happiness. We caught up with Jules Standish, colour therapist and author of The Essential Guide To Mindful Dressing (£10.99, O Books), to find out more…
Red will help you to face any fears you may have and will propel you into action. It is also a great choice if you need to embrace new challenges, like getting a job or making new friends. Red will inject you with enthusiasm and energy and project an image to others of a driven, motivated and dynamic person who will work hard to achieve results. Red is passionate and confident, therefore it is fabulous to wear on a date as it invokes these feelings in others too.
Pink will help you to get in touch with your compassionate, feminine nature and it can lead you to let go of any past relationships. For new relationships, wearing pink projects an image of a loving and tender person, and will immediately put others at ease in your presence. Magenta is a vibrant and sensual colour that is also youthful and fun loving, showing leadership abilities combined with self-confidence.
Orange will encourage your sociable nature. If you're lacking in self-worth and are feeling shy then this shade will give you the confidence to push boundaries, particularly when meeting new people. Wearing orange can make you feel brave and daring and presents yourself to others as active and fun loving. This automatically makes you feel happier and makes others feel more vital in your presence. As orange is a warm and stimulating colour others will be easily drawn to you when you wear it.
Yellow will help you to detach yourself from a situation so you can see it with clarity before making a decision. Yellow is the colour of mental creativity and intellect so it will enable you to stimulate and speed up your thinking process and trust in your gut instincts. It is the colour of sunlight and joy so wearing it will instantly be beneficial for you and is sure to make others smile too. It spreads optimism to all who see you in it. This is a fabulous colour for those studying as it helps you to acquire knowledge and promotes quick thinking. If incorporating it into your home décor, choose yellow in your study or children's play area but use sparingly in bedrooms as this mentally stimulating colour can lead to a lack of sleep!
Green is the colour of harmony and balance. It will enable you to see situations from all different angles with clarity and understanding. Green is the great peacemaker and allows you to set boundaries in your relationships too. If you are stuck in a rut this is the colour to wear to help move you into new possibilities allowing you to act from the heart. Are you feeling particularly run down? Green can help to balance the body and to detox the system so it's a great hue to wear when suffering from a hangover! Green projects an image of friendliness and generosity of spirit, showing you are warm hearted, open and honest and encourages others to be the same.
Wear blue if you need to calm your nerves and feel at peace. Officially, blue is the world’s favourite colour and this may be because blue releases the natural relaxant hormone oxytocin, calming down your nervous system to create a sense of peace. It enables you to take control of your anxiety and to communicate in a diplomatic and approachable way. Turquoise is the universal shade that suits everyone and is the best colour to wear with a suntan. It is an uplifting colour, full of youthfulness and optimism. Try navy for a more conventional work look which shows you are trustworthy and reliable.
Opt for purple if you strive to stand out from the crowd. If you need to tap into your creative side, you will feel inspired wearing purple. It also helps you to discover your leadership abilities. It combines wisdom and sensitivity and with shades ranging from indigo to violet, purple suggests power, mystery and sophistication.
